Iron nitride-
hardened steel
NitroSteel bars and tubes hardened by the Nitrotec process outperform
hard chrome plated products because of their ability to resist corrosion
and wear, and retain lubrication. The process diffuses iron nitride into
the steel, rather than depositing plating onto the steel's surface. So unlike
chrome, which flakes, slivers and blisters as it fails, NitroSteel's wear
layer is part of the steel, avoiding the flaking and blistering. The Nitrotec
process, as an atmospheric treatment instead of electrodeposition, presents
a dimensional uniformity. NitroSteel bars have found service on agriculture,
material handling, construction and military equipment. A.M. Castle &

Copper-based specialties.
Updated information is offered on a data sheet regarding this company's
copper-based master alloys, hardeners and deoxiders. These include 2% boron
copper, 2% lithium copper and 33% zirconium copper. Typical shapes, depending
on the selected product, can be chosen as ingots, waffles, cubes, slabs,
shot and pieces. These metallurgical specialties provide cost-effective
deoxidation and modification of mechanical properties. Belmont Metals

Titanium powders. Ultraclean, spherical and free-flowing titanium and
titanium alloy powders are offered with precise particle size distributions.
The powders are offered in commercially pure Ti6Al-4V, Ti6Al-2
Sn-4 Zr-2 Mo, and other compositions. They feature a controllable median
particle size distribution within a 18 to 325 Mesh range, and can be plasma
sprayed, sintered, or consolidated by hot isostatic pressing or extrusion.

Powdered metal gerotor
manufacturer. Aided by proprietary computer software, this company offers
comprehensive product engineering, development and manufacturing to produce
powder metal gerotors and associated porting for automotive and other applications.
Their software provides consistent lobe profiles with very small tip clearances,
which translates into higher efficiency, lower noise and higher pressure
capabilities for the pumps. Federal Mogul, PO Box 1966, Detroit,

High strength-to-weight ratio alloy. AerMet 310 alloy combines
an unprecedented high strength-to-weight ratio with a fracture toughness
and ductility that are exceptional at the material's high strength level.
It is offered for applications such as aircraft landing gear and hardware,
tooling, and any parts or components that might benefit from higher strength,
smaller size and/or lighter weight. AerMet 310 can achieve an ultimate tensile
strength of 315 ksi, with a 1.10 mega-inch strength-to-weight ratio. Charpy
V-notch impact tests showed AerMet 310 had an average impact energy in excess
of 20 ft. lbs., indicating high damage-tolerance. Carpenter Specialty

Composite metal products.
Custom-engineered metal products are offered that combine two material properties,
such as electrical conductivity and corrosion-resistance, or high mechanical
strength and biocompatibility. Two or more layers of gold, silver, platinum,
palladium, niobium, titanium and other alloys can be bonded to copper- and
nickel-based alloys. The resulting product is supplied in wire, rod or bar
stock, in sizes from 0.002 to 1.5 in. OD. Anomet Products Inc, 830
Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA 01545. 508-842-3069. Circle 410.
Precipitation-hardening stainless steel. Corrax stainless mold
steel offers easy heat treatment, excellent stability and very high corrosion
resistance. It is supplied in the solution-treated condition at 34-36 Rockwell
C, and this hardness can be increased by a low-temperature aging treatment
to a maximum of 50 Rockwell C. This lends to the manufacture of large, complex
molds for medical, plastic and rubber parts, where hardening and tempering
of a conventional steel grade could incur excessive distortion or even gross
cracking. The grade has highly uniform physical and mechanical properties,
even in large dimensions. Uddeholm, 4902 Tollview Dr, Rolling Meadows,

Chrome-plated shafting.
Used by manufacturers of piston rods, pins, guide posts and similar
components, CHROMEROD 100 offers a 100,000 psi minimum yield strength, excellent
machining characteristics and superior surface finish. Standard plating
is 0.0005 in./side minimum, and heavier thicknesses are available. CHROMEROD
100 is available in 1/2 to 4 1/2 in. round, with diameters up to 10 in.

Powder metallurgy sprockets.
The Duplex process enables appropriate sprockets or gears to be manufactured
with reduced weight, rotational inertia and increased sound dampening properties,
while reducing overall cost. The essential feature of this approach is the
selective application of a high hardness, high strength material for the
teeth, and a lower duty material with adequate keyway strength for the core.
