Thin-film battery co. raises $34.7 million for new manufacturing facilities
Infinite Power Solutions (IPS) has raised $34.7 million primarily to build new facilities for high-volume manufacturing of its LiTE*STAR™ thin-film batteries. Proceeds from this deal will also be used to accelerate business development and continue innovation of future battery technologies.
IPS develops, manufactures, and markets ultra-thin, flexible, rechargeable, solid-state, thin-film lithium micro-batteries. IPS batteries serve applications within the military, aerospace, smart card, active RFID, implantable medical device, embedded micro-controller, and wireless sensor markets. Featuring a solid-state electrolyte, LiTE*STAR batteries are ideal for extreme temperature applications and can be embedded into multi-layer rigid or flexible printed circuit boards.
What is a Thin-Film Battery (TFB)?
TFBs are small, thin electrochemical batteries fabricated using a sophisticated deposition process, generally in a vacuum environment, to create thin layers of battery materials. A glassy inorganic solid-state electrolyte known as LiPON (lithium phosphorus oxynitride) is used as the separator between the anode and the cathode. The main battery components (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) are generally less than 15μm in combined thickness. The choice of substrate material and encapsulation (packaging) largely determines the overall battery thickness, which is typically less than 0.5mm thick. TFBs are generally known for their unique thinness, re-chargeability, rapid recharge, power density, broad temperature performance, and low leakage.
The LiTE*STAR thin-film battery consists of inorganic battery components. In particular, a LiPON electrolyte is used with a LiCoO2 (lithium cobalt oxide) cathode material. A proprietary metal foil substrate and patented encapsulation form the battery package and can be manufactured to allow small, very thin, flexible batteries. These small micro-batteries can then be integrated into IC packages, printed circuit boards (both rigid and flex), and even the structural material of the application.
Bob Metcalfe of Polaris (an IPS investor) says, "We've seen many start-ups with new battery chemistries. The IPS solid-state TFB technology, with its postage-stamp size, extreme durability, high power, flexibility, and virtually infinite rechargeability, is truly disruptive. In 2007, a projected 10 billion embedded micro-controllers will be shipped worldwide in a vast variety of applications. Many new applications of micro-controllers, sensors, and tags will be enabled by IPS' rechargeable TFBs."

A/B relay switch with remote serial control
ESL presents its new Model 7232 RJ45 A/B Relay Switch with Remote Serial Control. This switch affords local and remote access functionality. Manual control is accomplished by simply pressing the front panel pushbutton to change the switch position. Remote access can be accomplished by RS232 commands sent via the Remote Serial Port. Users can remotely monitor status, control switch functions, and lock out the front panel pushbutton. Front-panel LEDs display the current switch position and power status.
The switch ports are transparent to all data. All eight leads of the RJ45 interface are switched. All switched signals are passed via copper contact relays that maintain their position and continuity even in the event of a power loss or failure.

Vacuum-encapsulated CCFL inverters
ERG offers a family of DC-AC inverters for powering CCFL-backlit LCDs that feature a unique vacuum-encapsulated design to ensure reliable CCF lamp ignition, even in harsh environments.
ERG’s E200II, SE/SE2, and P44/P55 Series inverters provide maximum resistance to shock, vibration, humidity. They are an ideal solution for CCFL-backlit flat-panel displays where compact size, high efficiency, and absolute reliability of the power source are critical, such as in medical diagnostic equipment, industrial instrumentation, POS displays, and high-pressure automotive type lamps.
ERG’s vacuum-encapsulated inverters operate at high efficiencies (typically 80% to 85%), and are designed and tested using the actual LCD display assembly to ensure system compatibility. ERG’s customized magnetics are self-shielding to minimize EMI and RFI interference. The encapsulation of the inverter enables designers to better package it with respect to the rest of the system — only the pins are exposed, so only the bottom of their printed circuit board is a “high voltage” consideration. This is especially useful for embedded designs.

Low-jitter LVPECL VCXOs
MMD Components (Monitor & Quartztek) has announced a new line of compact, low-jitter low-voltage positive emitter coupled logic (LVPEC) voltage-controlled crystal oscillators (VCXOs) with frequency ranges up to 700 MHz and utilizing inverted mesa and AT strip crystals. Package size is only 5 mm x 7 mm x 1.5 mm (0.2 in. x 0.28 in. x 0.06 in.).
The latest entry in MMD’s expanding MVIP series, the new VCXOs are especially suitable in applications with extreme environmental conditions. The units can operate in temperatures ranging from –55ºC to +125ºC, and the inverted mesa technology enables them to meet the same shock and vibration levels as oscillators operating in the 20 MHz range. The inverted mesa crystals also allow extended pull ranges — up to ±200 ppm at 700 MHz — while the chemically etched AT strip crystals, operating in the fundamental mode, provide an excellent VC-frequency pull range and a low factory jitter in the 0.5 picoseconds root-mean-square range.
The high-frequency VCXOs are available with tristate and LVPECL differential outputs and in operating voltages of 3V and 3.3V.
